Pragmatics and Semantics
A lot of contemporary philosophical theories are based on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatist perspective).
Others take a more comprehensive perspective on pragmatics, like relevance theory, which attempts to understand the of the processes that lead to an utterance being made by a listener. However, this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.
What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism is a philosophical outlook that offers an alternative to analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. Charles Sanders Peirce was the first to introduce the concept, and William James extended it. Later, Josiah Royce developed the philosophy. It had a profound effect on the areas of inquiry ranging from philosophy of theology to philosophy of science, but also ethics and politics, as well as the philosophy of language. The fundamental premise of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a rule for defining the meaning of hypotheses through investigating their 'practical consequences that they have for experience in specific situations. Pragmatism also addresses the relationship between beliefs, reality and human rationality. It also focuses on the role of values and virtues, and the purpose and meaning of our lives. In this way, it has largely left behind classical pragmatism's metaphysics and value theory. However, some neopragmatists have been trying to create a metaethics based on the ideas of pragmatics from classical pragmatism and experience.
Classical pragmatics was first developed by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. Both were influential thinkers and published a number of books. Their work is still highly regarded to this day.
Although pragmatism can be considered an alternative to the dominant analytic and continental philosophical traditions, it is not without its critics. Some philosophers, like have claimed that deconstructionism isn't an entirely new philosophy and that pragmatism simply represents an expression.
